WHAT IS Gaelic Football?

Gaelic football is an adapted smaller version of Gaelic which has been developed by the Gaelic Athletic Association to introduce the game l to children of all abilities and disabilities aged 7-10 (KS2) Year 3/4/5. Gaelic football takes children through various stages which are, catching, bouncing, kicking, hand passing and tackling.

WHO IS THE Gaelic Go Games FESTIVAL FOR?

The Festival is for children in Years 3, 4 and 5. 


WHAT IS THE FORMAT?

U7s Year 3

All participants play at least 50% of the game.

Playing area 45m x 40m. Zones 15m x 15m x 15m, Zone 1 is defence, zone 2 is midfield and zone 3 is attack.

Playing Time 4 minutes x 3

Football Playing Rule: 7 v 7, 1 Hop of the ball 1 Solo of the ball (4 steps or 4 seconds). Pick up from the ground player must be on his/her feet when picking up the ball. Players fouled takes free. Goalkeeper must take kick out. Player closest to where the ball goes out of play must take resulting in a side-line. Players should rotate each break and should not play in same zone twice in the same game Scoring: Over the cross bar is 3 points and in the goal is 1 point.


U9 Year 4

All participants play at least 50% of the game.

Playing area 60m x 40m. Zones 20m x 20m x 20m. Zone 1 is defence, zone 2 is midfield and zone 3 is attack.

Playing Time: 5 minutes x 3

Football Playing Rule: 7 v 7, 1 Hop 1 Solo. 1 Standard pick up. The midfielder that successfully kick passes and when the ball is clearly caught in the attack zones may enter into the zones in support play along with one defender and midfielder. When play is stopped both players must return to the middle zone. Keeper takes kick out from 10m. The player that is fouled must take the free kick. Players on both teams should rotate each break and should not play in same zone twice in the same game.

Scoring: Over = 3 points, Under = 1 point


U11 Year 5

All participants play at least 50% of the game.

Playing area 90m x 50m

Football Playing Rule: 9 v 9, 1 Hop 1 Solo (2 plays),

Scoring: Over = 3 points, Under = 1 point

Playing Time: 10 minutes per half.

WHAT DOES THE GAME LOOK LIKE?

The Festival will be based on the various stages i.e. simple catch and throw. (Follow link for the rules) This allows children without any previous experience of Gaelic to take part. Let’s learn on the day! At the end of the day there will be some mini games for the children to try their new skills out.

WHY GAELIC FOOTBALL AND GO GAMES?

  • All participants play at least 50% of the game.

  • Participant needs are catered for, where possible, on the basis of two year age cohorts i.e. U.7, U.9 & U.11 in a manner consistent with the ethos of Go Games.

  • Activities are structured in a manner which optimises the level of fun, friendship, fair play and achievement derived by participants.

  • Participants train and play in a safe, supportive and stimulating environment where they are encouraged to risk error, to learn and to derive maximum enjoyment from their involvement.

  • Players master the basic skills of Gaelic Football and experience the sense of accomplishment, which derives from acquiring playing proficiency on the left and right hand side of the body.

  • Everybody involved in Go Games, whether as players, parents/guardians, spectators, mentors, teachers, officials etc., should adhere to the key underpinning principles and give expression to the GAA ‘Give Respect, Get Respect’ initiative.
